The Timberland Group

Rope Installation, Tensioning & Winding

Timberland engineers are experts in rope tensioning and are the market leader in supplied systems.

Wire rope manufacturers recommend pre-tensioning rope onto hoist drums to avoid potential damage caused by the upper layers plunging or cutting down through loosely wound lower layers when the hoist is first used. By installing the hoist rope under tension, the lower layers of hoist rope are wound tightly onto the drum to prevent movement of the hoist rope which can wear on the hoist drum shell and hoist rope.

Many mine operators also change the cross over point of the hoist rope periodically to prevent the most extreme rope wear. This requires removing the hoist rope from the hoist drum, cutting off a short piece of the rope from the dead end and re-tensioning the hoist rope back onto the hoist drum.
